Grants available for building and maintaining recreational trails across South Carolina

August 23, 2022

SCPRT is accepting letters of intent from eligible entities until October 1, 2022

Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism (SCPRT) is now accepting letters of intent from eligible entities for the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant.

RTP is a federal program designed to help states provide and maintain recreational trails for both motorized and nonmotorized recreational trail use. RTP funds are available to state, federal, and local government agencies, as well as qualified private organizations.

Funding is provided on a cost-reimbursement basis, with the grant recipient paying 100% of the cost of an item before submitting a reimbursement request for 80% of eligible costs. For nonmotorized and diverse trail use projects, individual trail grants can range from $10,000 ($12,500 total project cost) to $100,000 ($125,000 total project cost). Motorized trail projects are not limited to the $100,000 cap; these projects are eligible for the maximum amount of motorized funding available.

Eligible entities interested in applying for the RTP grant must submit their letter of intent forms to SCPRT by October 1, 2022. Submission instructions are included on the form.

In the most recent RTP funding cycle, 11 South Carolina projects were awarded a total of nearly $1.2M to build and maintain trail projects.
